MISSION STATEMENT

Thinking about adopting a Pug? For more information on our rescue, please read this letter.

Great Lakes Pug Club Rescue is a working group of volunteer members and friends dedicated to the welfare and quality of life for Pug Dogs in need. MOPS (Making Our Pugs Safe)will pre-screen and approve placement of rescued Pugs. Spay/neutering of placed Pugs is mandatory for the purpose of being nonbreeding PETS only. Registrations become the property of MOPS.

If you are interested in adopting a pug, there is often a wait. Filling out this application is the first step in becoming an approved adopter.
Please understand that this process is not typically a fast turn-around. Our goal is to find the right home for our rescues the first time around.

CURRENTLY AVAILABLE PUGS*

updated 1/05/08

We have some new pugs who need loving homes!! You will need to fill out a rescue application if you are interested in adopting a pug. Dogs come and go quickly in rescue so a dog you may be interested in will not necessarily be available at the time your application is processed or other, already approved homes, may be a better match for that particular dog.

CODY

CodyCody is a 6yr old, neutered male, 21 lbs., fawn. Came to GLPC Rescue from Chicago Anti Cruelty as a give up. Cody is athletic and energetic, built like a deer and can run that fast! He can live with other dogs and cats, altho some of his vocalization makes him sound like a bully, he can live in harmony w/ other animals and he does well w/ older children. He should go to a home that has had dogs before and can correct and redirect some of his behavior w/ positive reenforcement. He knows "come, sit, and wait". He wants to please ... he would do best as the only dog where he can display what he has been taught and get all the praise. With a real dog-savy owner, Cody may be a good candidate for agility trials or rally. He is crate trained and does require being watched in the house for leg-lifting.

RECENTLY ADOPTED PUGS

HIGGINS ADOPTED JANUARY, 2008!! Higgins

My name is Higgins and I am a great pet! I celebrated my 1st birthday on July 3rd. My previous owner did not have time to train me so I was released into the loving care of the rescue. When I went in to be neutered they found that I had crystals in my bladder. This was likely caused by my previous diet.

Higgins laying down

I have a friendly personality and t get along with humans of every age. I also love playing with other dogs. I will be the first one to admit I need some basic training but I know with patience and love I will be a quick learner. I sleep in my crate and I am ok with that. I also am in it while there is nobody home. I'm pretty much a clean house dog now that I've been neutered.

GEORGE -- ADOPTED 12/07!! George

My name is George and I am a happy, healthy, and beautiful 1 ½ year old pug. My family had to give me up because they could no longer provide for me. I love children and love to play with other dogs. I was born with luxating patella in both of my hind legs but my doctor said I will not need surgery for it. I just need to stay trim, healthy and exercise. My foster mommy tells me I am so handsome and so well mannered. Also, I am house trained. I hope to be adopted out soon to someone who will love me forever.

OTIS ADOPTED October, 2007

Otis

My name is Otis. I am a 2 year old fawn male rescued from a terrible neglectful owner. I was kept outside chained in the heat and found covered in mud. A sheriff rescued me. I am so happy to be with my foster mommy and foster pug brothers now that I love to give lots of licks and kisses. My foster mommy tells me I am so beautiful and very well mannered. I am house trained and get along great with children and my 2 foster brother pugs. I hope to be adopted to a forever home who will make me feel safe and secure and love me forever.

WALLY ADOPTED October, 2007!

Wally

Hi my name is Wally. I am 3 ½ years young and a really good boy. I’m a little on the larger size, not fat, just a little taller. As you can see I’m very handsome. I was given up because my owner could no longer provide for me. Fortunately the Great Lakes Pug Club rescue took me in to take care of me and to find me my forever home. I am being treated for some skin issues, we are not sure exactly yet what it is, but I have itchy skin. My coat is beautiful it’s just that sometimes I need to scratch it. I am taking an antihistamine called Hydroxyzine 3 times a day and my foster mommy is also giving me an oral liquid once 1 week for 6 weeks which seems to help. I’m eating ZD script food at the moment to see if this will help control the itching. So I do have some allergies to something, but we just don’t know exactly what yet. My foster mommy says I am a really clean house dog and I know my manners and will wait for her to tell me to come in for my food. I'm not like my foster siblings that rush in and almost plow anything in front of them over... nope not me, I am very calm and very easy going. I love to sleep on my mommy’s bed too. So would you like to adopt me? I have a few more weeks of meds to take but my foster mommy can already see a small difference and it’s only been 4 days since she had to put that stuff in my mouth…. wasn’t that bad tasting. I am neutered and up to date with my shots.

Bo
BO I FINALLY HAVE A HOME! ADOPTED September, 2007!!

HI my name is Bo! I'm about 4 years old and was given up to a shelter because my family had no time for me. The shelter that had me saw that I had something wrong with my back legs so they sent me to an orthopedic vet and he did some tests. It looks like I must have had some type of injury to my hind quarters which makes me sometimes stagger a bit. But it does not stop me from getting around. I love being out side and love to take walks. The shelter had me for a while and placed me twice but I came back because the other dogs in the family did not like me. The problem was never me, I'm very kind and loving.

MAVERICK ADOPTED September, 2007!!

Maverick

Maverick

My name is Maverick and I am a terrific dog! I am about 8 months old and I love to play and run around. I enjoy taking walks and I go for a one mile walk every day. When the rescue took me in I had very bad ear and nose roll infections but both of those things have cleared up. I am currently recovering from a case of generalized mange so I am not neutered yet, but I will be by the time you take me home. I am about 15 pounds. I am good with kids and I really like to wrestle with my foster pug brother. I am potty trained and I am attending training classes with my foster brother so I can learn better manners. Because I am not “fixed” I occasionally have an accident in the house but not very often. I love to cuddle when I am tired and if you let me I’ll sleep right next to you every night. I get medicine put in my eyes daily to help keep them from getting too dry.

UPDATE 9-03-07: I've been cleared by my vet... no more treatments for mange!! YAHOO !! I will be getting neutered in the next few weeks.

JoJoe ADOPTED September, 2007!

JoJoe

Hi my name is JoJoe… I know… I’m a cutie pie aren’t I! I’m told I’m about 3 years young. So here’s my story. I was not living in the best conditions, outside most of the time regardless of the weather here in IL. A nice lady neighbor called the police and filed a report against my former owner. Then Great Lakes Pug Club rescue got a call to come pick me up. So they did, and this started my new life! I am as happy as a pug on a rug… hee-hee.

When my foster mommy took me home I came with a little extra baggage… I had a ton of fleas and tested positive for whipworm. So she put Frontline on me right away for the fleas and away they went! She also has 3 Interceptor tabs that I get 1 every 3 weeks to get rid of the whipworms. We took care of those issues and I’m all cleaned up! I’ve already had 3 baths and I actually like them. Another little issue I came with was my eye sight. I can see, but not so good judging distance. I can jump on the couch, make my way around the house and the back yard, it’s just sometimes I boink into things if I turn to fast. My foster vet has done an eye corneal staining exam and there are NO ulcers or cataracts and my eye pressure is fine and I’m producing enough tears too. So my foster vet, whom I like very much, thinks most of my eye issue was caused from the elements/living conditions that I was in for 3 years. My foster mommy puts this ointment called Neo-Poly-Dex in my eyes twice a day and she thinks my sight is improving. I might need meds for my future to keep my eyes good. She says almost every pug needs some type of eye meds sooner or later.

I love to sit next to you, I love treats and have been a clean house dog. I could use a little one-on-one training because I’m still very much a puppy. I am leaning how to sit when I am told. I’ve been neutered and just waiting to get my up to date shots and to have my eyes checked on again and then I am ready to go to my forever home.

Puggy

ADOPTED, JULY, 2007

Puggy is a sweet precious 9 year old lady. Puggy's prior owner passed away and Puggy was left to the care of her daughter who sadly couldn't care for her and turned her over to a shelter in IL. Fortunately this shelter contacted MOPS and we were able to get this sweet girl. Upon entering rescue, Puggy was spayed, given a dental (lost a couple of teeth in the process) and was updated on all routine vaccinations. Though older, Puggy still has a lot of love to give. Being a typical pug she is her foster mom's constant shadow. We are looking for a ranch style home for Puggy as her foster mom has noticed she limps once in a while when doing a lot of stairs. Though she seems to be in no pain, her foster mom is currently trying some holistic approaches to aid in Puggy's limping.

Charlie ADOPTED September, 2007!!

Charlie, standing

Charlie and Lola came into the program together as strays found "five miles from anywhere" in a country setting. In their foster house, there were various children, ages 15 months to 8 1/2 years, so for some dogs, this might be a real chaotic challenge... But not for Charlie and Lola!!!

Charlie

Charlie is an adult male fawn approximately 10 years young...He has lots of energy for his age, and although we do use crates when he is not able to be directly monitored, he has not attempted to mark, and is very easy to distract if he shows too much interest in a certain area. He loves to play with toys, is very comfortable jumping on and off the couch, and he alerts if he hears the doors open. He has shown no fear of children or adults, and is just a wonderful, happy-go-lucky guy.

Lola

ADOPTED, JULY, 2007

Lola, black pug

Lola's sweet face Lola is a sweet, soft-tempered black female, about 10 years young. She plays toys, has not had an accident in the house, and seems to enjoy the kids, though she does walk away when she is ready for a break. She is a little more timid and seems to take very well to positive reinforcement in the form of verbal encouragement and, yes, coddling!

Caesar
ADOPTED, JULY, 2007
Caesar

Caesar arrived in rescue on 6/1. He is a fawn male, approximately 4 to 5 years of age who was found wandering in a very rural area. He was covered in ticks and neighbors said he had been hanging around for about 2 weeks. He did test negative for Lyme Disease but is on a course of antibiotics preventatively. He appears to be crate trained and is quiet and clean in his crate. He is friendly towards people, other dogs and cats. He needs to be neutered and have a dental before he can be released to a new home.

Gracie (2)

Gracie

June, 2007, I have been adopted!!

Hi My name is Gracie. They have me listed as "Gracie 2" because GLPC already used my beautiful name for another foster they had before. Let me tell you a little about myself. I came into the program via a shelter. I was 1 of 27 dogs that the shelter seized from a back yard breeder, thank goodness! I came in with a urinary tract infection (UTI), which is cleared up now.
As you can see from my picture. I'm a cutie pie. The vet seems to think I am about 4 years young. My foster mommy tells everyone that I'm a sweetie and that I am very smart. She says once I come around and know that I can trust you, I'm just a doll. I'm still learning my potty habits in the house, so you will need to be patient with me.

MOCHA

ADOPTED, June, 2007

Mocha

Hi my name is Mocha... don't ya think I'm a cutie pie? I came into the rescue program the same way as my girl friend Maddie. There was 4 of us taken out of a really ugly situation. Anyways that was my before life... Now I'm starting my new life. The vet seems to think I'm about 2 years old. I'm a really good girl, I get along with other dogs too, but I love my foster mommy. I don't really play a lot so I need a home that won't be "over-rough" with me. I need to be in a home with older children, I am very independent.. don't get me wrong I love to cuddle, but I don't "need" to have another dog around to play with. My right eye is almost completely blind, but I have a really good left eye. My new vet will take care of my eyelashes that are turning in when I blink at the same time she spays me. This can lead to ulcers of the eye and we don't want that to happen. The vet found worms in my stool sample which I have been treated for so that won't be a problem. My spay and eye surgery apt. is set up for 05/18/07. I will need some time to re-cover but then I would love to get into my forever home. I need a little help in the potty department because my previous owner never took the time to teach me that I need to potty outside, it's not real bad but I still have an accident every once in a while.

ADOPTED, June, 2007

MADDIE

Maddie
May, 2007 -- I HAVE A NEW HOME!!

Hello... Am I not the cutest pug you've ever seen?? !!!! My name is Maddie. My foster mom and vet seem to think I'm about 18-24 months old. I have a TON of energy and only weigh about 13 lbs. You are most likely wondering why such a cute little pug would end up in a rescue. Well thank goodness I did. I was used as a breeding dog. My previous owner cared more about making money then taking care of me and the other 3 pugs she owned. So the county came by for a surprise visit and and found us in a mess. They seized us from her and called Great Lakes Pug Club to come get us. At first I was a little shy, but once I found out that this was a good thing and that this life is what I should be living, everything was good! I came with a little baggage. My previous owner did not take me to the vet and did not have me on monthly heart worm meds so I tested positive at first for heart worm. I also had 2 types of parasites in my stool. So my foster mom had to give me meds to kill the worms. The vet seems to think that I tested positive for heart worm because of the ugly parasites that were in my body as my second heart worm test came out negative. I am potty trained and really good with other dogs, in fact I love them. I will be getting spayed soon and at the same time my new vet will do a little eye surgery on me because I have something called Entropion. My eye lashes curl inwards which can cause eye ulcers and I don't want those! After my surgery I will need to re-cooperate a little then I'll be ready for my new home. I can't wait to move in with them!!

Petey ADOPTED!!! May, 2007

Hi My name is Petey and my birthday is Aug. 15th. I was born in 1999 which would make me turning 8 years young this year. I am one handsome boy! I was turned in to a shelter to be euthanized by my previous family because they did not have the means to help me get some well needed vet treatment for my skin problem. You see what I'm told is if I would have had the right type of food and vet care none of these skin issues that I have would even have occurred. So I'm off to the vet so he can tell me what I need to do so I can get better. My foster mommy says I'm a real sweetheart and that I even get along with her black female pug who I guess can be "a little pushy" at times... I just look at her and say "ok, never mind" and go and find something else to do. After my skin gets back in shape I will be ready for my forever home. I will need to be on a good dog food that will take care of my skin and fur coat.

Zoe

Zoe -- April, 2007 -- I HAVE JUST BEEN ADOPTED!!!

Hi My name is Zoe, I am about 4 years young and just over 14 lbs. I'm a really good girl and my foster mommy tells me that I have the prettiest eyes ever. I was found as a stray and my previous owners never came to look for me. So the humane society called Great Lakes Pug Club & Rescue to come get me because I needed some TLC. You see a long long time ago, before I was found and brought to the shelter, I was hit by something really big (like a car) and never taken to the vet to get my broken parts fixed. So they healed sorta kinda wrong. GLPC brought me to vet for some x-rays and blood work and found that the reason my back end sways and I fall sometimes is because my spine has arthritis and my pelvis was broken and never healed the right way so my left hip grew back together wrong which makes me fall sometimes. I don't feel the pain cuz they told me I have permanent nerve damage. My foster mommy is really upset that my previous family did not care enough to get my bones set straight because I never would have been in this shape now. I also have a really bad UTI that I am on antibiotics for to clear it up. So because surgery would most likely not help me anyways because of the severe nerve damage this is how I am. I am very happy and I am very loving. I need a home with no stairs and with enough rugs so I can get around easier so I won't slip a lot. I'm not ready to go to a new home yet as I still need to be spayed. But when I am ready do you think you can give me the forever home I deserve?

3/30/07 UPDATE: I have been spayed and recovering well. My UTI is getting much better with the meds and the RX food that I am on. I will be getting my stitches out the second week in April and then I will be ready for my new forever home. I won't need to be on RX food for forever, but will need a good healthy food not those kinds like Pedigree or Alpo. Those types of food have no value to us doggies. I will need to be watched for a while to make sure I'm going potty ok and not straining to go. I must insist that my new home be a little on the sedate side. I love the outdoors, walking and am good with other dogs as long as the others are not to much of an Alpha dog. I have a very strong personality and sometimes this does not work out with another female alpha. I just won't be able to withstand a ton of exercise and hope to get into a home that will walk me a little everyday but then let me rest in your arms. I am doing well with my leg issues but that is not to say that I will forever have the use of them as I get into my senior year... Maybe I will, I am just not sure.

04/14/07 UPDATE: Part of my stitches were taken out and the 1/2 will be taken out this week. I found out this week that I need to be placed in a home that does NOT have another Alpha female dog. I have a very strong personality and with another female dog with the same thing tends to cause issues at times. So I would love to be in a house with a male dog or a very very laid back female dog.

I HAVE JUST BEEN ADOPTED!!!

izzy

Hi my name is Izzie. My foster vet seems to think by looking at my teeth that I am about 7 years young. I was in a puppy mill in MO all of my life and never really new what a "real dog's" life should be until Great Lakes Pug Club & Rescue came and got me. I am now living the good life, what my foster mommy says I should have been living all along. I am very friendly, am pretty much 100% house broken, spayed and really good with other dogs. I will have my stitches removed in another week or so and then will be ready for my forever home. Even tho I came from a puppy miller I did not come with a lot of baggage. I'm pretty much an all around great dog, so they tell me. I have a fatty tumor under my belly, but the doc says it's nothing to worry about and it will be fine. So that's my story and the great thing is that it has a happy ending!

I HAVE JUST BEEN ADOPTED!!!

Hi my name is Hoover. I'm about 2 or 3 years of age. I am housebroken. My previous family did not have time for me and wanted me to be happy. I'm very affectionate and playful yet I really don't like loud places or loud voices (I get scared). I need someone that will take time with me and help me come out of my shell. I want to learn not to be so nervous and need help so I really would rather not live with any small children. My foster family said I seem to prefer women over men. I'm told that I'm a little over powering with small female dogs but I'm learning to do better with larger breeds of dogs, both female or male. I love cats as long as they love dogs. Can you help me with my little issues and give me the home I deserve?

Lexis

Lexis

April, 2007
I HAVE JUST BEEN ADOPTED!!!

Lexis came to us from a KILL shelter and is now in the safe hands of her foster family. Lexis was born in Oct. 1999 which will make her 8 in Oct of this year. The reason we know this is because she is micro-chipped. Her micro chip number lead us back to the breeder who gave us the person's name she was sold to. Unfortunatelyt that person did not want Lexis back. She is very friendly, potty trained and quite the happy little pug. She has a really cute front white paw with black spots on it. Just because she will be 8 in Oct. does not mean she is ready to sit down for the rest of her life. She loves to play, walk and cuddle. Oh and of course, EAT. Can you give her the FOREVER home she deserves?

I HAVE JUST BEEN ADOPTED!!!

fritz laying downFritz

Hi my name is Fritz, and I’m 3 year’s young. I was very loved and very well taken care of by my previous family. However, there were young children around all the time, and it was just too chaotic of an environment for me. I am a very well behaved pug; I know some basic commands and have no issues in the potty department.

At this time I have to insist that I live out the rest of my years (and there will many of them) in a home with no children. I envision my future home being one of a calm atmosphere, where I can relax and sleep undisturbed, quietly by your side. However, don’t think I plan on being a couch potato all the time - I am still a young guy with ample energy and would like to go for walks and be played with. You must know I will require a special dog food for the rest of my life as I have allergies. Currently I am on Eukanuba Kangaroo and Oats, and am doing very well on this, there are some foods I am definitely allergic to, and my foster family would be more than happy to discuss these with you.

I HAVE JUST BEEN ADOPTED!!!

5 year old male pug, neutered, up to date on shots, and microchipped.
What a wonderful boy and such a cutie! Spike gets along good with children, other pets, he is playful and an all around great pug. He likes following his foster mommy around the house wherever she goes and likes to cuddle. Spike is 5 and a bigger boy at 33 lbs so his adopter will have to keep an eye on his weight.
